In 2021, we were looking for a project to start with a group of friends when one of them suggested designing a motel, like the ones you find in the United States. Being French, I wasn’t very familiar with the concept. Motels are rare in France, and I didn’t really know what to expect. After a bit of research and some explanations, it quickly felt like a great idea. That’s how it all began.
We needed inspiration for the colors, the design, and above all a cohesive theme to shape this resort. We leaned into the playful aesthetics of the 80s and 90s, drawing from Miami, GTA Vice City, Scarface, synthwave and vaporwave culture, as well as influences from South America and French Guiana. We were also inspired by two French TV series: OVNI(s), a kind of French Stranger Things set in the 1970s, and 3615 Monique, which explores the early days of phone services through the Minitel era.
Why French Guiana? It’s a region that rarely gets attention, along with other French overseas territories. I wanted to create something with a French identity without placing it in Europe, and this felt like the perfect direction.
The project began on a small roadside parcel along Route 9 on the Mainland. At the time, it was just a simple parking lot, a modest motel, and a pool. It didn’t take long to realize we wanted something much bigger. We relocated near the Blake Sea, along Route 8, and that’s where things truly took off. We expanded across several sims, rebuilding and growing around the original motel.
From there, the vision evolved. We added an airfield connected to other destinations in Second Life, rental homes for residents, and a yacht club to fully enjoy the Blake Sea. We also built the Chateau Plaza, a tower inspired by 1980s New York yuppie culture and the French comedy show “Message a caractere informatif,” known for its reinterpretation of vintage corporate films.
As events became more popular, the limits of the Mainland, especially expansion constraints and lag, pushed us to rethink everything.
We eventually decided to rebuild the entire project on private sims, recreating it almost identically while preserving the spirit of the original motel.
Le Chateau is a virtual tale of luck, grit, know-how and the magic that arises when an assortment of eccentric characters come together to build something unique. What started as a small roadside motel has grown into something much larger. Not just a place, but a lifestyle.
Today, Le Chateau has grown into more than +30 sims spread across Second Life. Different themes, different atmospheres, but always the same spirit that started it all.
A bit of lore about Le Chateau

The 1980s. Somewhere in the French Overseas Territories, in South America.
French Guiana.
The air is hot and heavy the moment you step off an LC Airways plane onto the tarmac of Le Messire Airfield. As you look around, you notice your luggage mixed in with other, more questionable cargo. Men in stained tank tops unload crates from the aircraft, while distant South American music crackles through an old radio.
Nearby, a group of older men stand silently in a worn sheet-metal building, watching you. Their uniforms look French, but from another time, another era.
You make your way toward the large white wooden gates of the Le Chateau Motel. From inside, you hear laughter, splashing water, and music typical of the time. At the entrance, staff greet you warmly, handing you a cocktail and guiding you to your room or bungalow. The contrast is striking. The air feels lighter, the grass perfectly green, the vegetation lush and vibrant. After the roughness of the airfield, it almost feels too perfect, yet strangely comforting.
Once inside your room, curiosity takes over. Through the window, you notice a steady flow of unusual activity. Strange packages being moved. Men in suits heading toward a peculiar building shaped like a flying saucer. Others, dressed in East German uniforms, carrying heavy briefcases toward the exit.
In the distance, you might hear the low rumble of rocket launches. Smoke rises into the sky from the nearby European space center in Kourou.
You start to wonder what exactly you’ve stepped into.
...Welcome to Le Chateau Motel. Welcome to the 80s.
Le Chateau Motel was founded in French Guiana by Antoine Montagne, the head of a powerful French cartel. The location is strategic. French territory, deep in the jungle, close to major South American routes and only a few hours by plane from Florida.
Behind its relaxed facade, the motel is said to serve as a rear base for international trafficking operations, and possibly more. Rumors suggest the presence of Eastern Bloc agents, with sightings of HVA operatives reported nearby. Others claim that CIA agents blend in just as easily, hidden behind sunglasses and loud Hawaiian shirts.
Despite all this, the Le Chateau Motel has earned a surprising reputation. It is even said to have been featured in the French Michelin Guide for its quality of service, an unexpected distinction for such a remote location.
